Referee Pay Update

It’s been a big year for our referees and referee development at SBA! The referee program has been reviewed and we’ve seen fantastic results due to the changes made so far. The number of qualified referees on domestic games has increased and the performance of our representative referees has been excellent.

We’re proud of the progress so far and look forward to more improvements in 2024.

What’s new?

The referee pay scale has been reviewed and updated. The new pay scale will be applied from the first week of Summer Season. These changes have been made to:

  • Better reward referees for their commitment and effort to developing as a referee.
  • Incentivise our referees to work on their skills and achieve qualifications.

Update Referee Pay Structure from 10 October 2023

Other changes

  • Greg Davids took on the role of Board Director overseeing the Officiating Portfolio
  • Introduced duty referees for U19s and senior competition
  • Nurtured a referee mentor team consisting of senior and experienced junior referees
  • Increased the presence of referee supervisors at junior games

Why was the referee pay structure reviewed?

Our goal is to establish refereeing as a worthwhile and rewarding alternative to part-time employment for our younger referees. We don’t want to lose them to flipping burgers! These young referees make an important contribution to the Tigers and are the referees of the future. We’re also keen for senior duty referees to transition from duty referees to qualified referees allowing them to enjoy the experience and referee with more confidence.

What is the benefit to SBA members?

  • More qualified referees ensures we can cover all U19B and senior games with two qualified referees.
  • A focus on continued referee development will result in an improved level of officiating across all SBA games.
  • Qualified mentor referees support our green shirts by supervising junior games.
  • Having sufficient referees allows us to meet the requirement of providing a referee for all representative teams.

What changes are planned for the future?

  • Introduce a communications platform that includes our junior referees
  • Build a library of referee instructional resources and facilitate discussions around these
  • Foster a high-performance referee community which engages regularly and assist each others development
  • Grow our mentoring team
  • Publish a referee training calendar of events for 2024 to include scheduled clinics and workshops
  • Include neighbouring associations in our referee development activities
  • Continue to provide opportunities for referees and assist them to reach their goals

Keen to join the referee crew?

Email enquiries@shoalhavenbasketball.com.au to be notified about the next course or talk to a Referee Supervisor to learn more.

We encourage players U14s and older, and parent/guardians to become a referee. It’s a great way to learn more about the game, earn some extra money, and support the game we all love!
