FOLLOW YOUR BASKETBALL DREAMS IN THE BLACK AND GOLD

WHAT IS THE SHOALHAVEN TIGERS REPRESENTATIVE BASKETBALL PROGRAM?

Representing the Tigers is a rewarding commitment. Players wishing to take a step beyond weekly domestic competition can trial to compete at a range of levels. Are you ready to don the black and gold?

The Tigers have a proud representative tradition that spans generations. Join the best basketballers in the Shoalhaven!

We enter teams from development level through to Waratah League.

WHY PLAY REP?

Representative basketball is a lot of fun but it’s also challenging. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose… Whatever happens, you’ll build friendships and team bonds that last a lifetime. Playing representative basketball fosters physical and mental fitness that is valuable on and off court.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO REPRESENT THE TIGERS?

The SBA rep program is for team players who desire to succeed. You’ll be required to commit to training, learn from your coach, invest in individual skill development, and show up on court. We expect our representative players to be active participants in club life.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who can trial for a representative team?

All junior and senior players in our domestic competition are invited to attend representative trials. Players from other Associations are also welcome.

When do representative trials take place?

Trials are generally held in late September or early October. This will vary depending on the representative season that year and coach availability. Trial dates will be announced on the website and at weekly competition.

Can I join a representative team after the season has started?

No. Teams are selected at trials and play together for the duration of the season. A coach may seek permission from the Board to recruit an additional player if one is lost due to injury or a team is short due to other factors.

When is training for representative teams?

Training times are allocated when a team is selected and are based on court availability. Each team will train once a week. Many teams make the commitment to training twice a week. Players are expected to attend all training sessions unless they have a contagious illness. Absence from training may affect court time.

What competitions do SBA’s junior representative teams participate in?

Teams nominate for John Martin Country Tournament and one or more of the following competitions: Barrengarry Conference and/or Southern Junior League (SJL).

How is it decided which teams will enter?

The number of representative teams each year depends on the strength of the players available and the availability of coaching staff. The number of referees available is also a factor as every team requires a nominated referee to enter a competition.

How much does representative basketball cost?

Representative player levies vary between teams as they are based on the competitions that the Coach has selected to participate in.

The rep levy is made up of two components – a compulsory administration fee of $215 plus individual competition fees. The administration fee includes training, court hire, equipment, referee travel allowance, and administration costs plus a competition fee for each competition nominated.

On selection to a representative team, a non-refundable $100 commitment fee is payable. This is applied to the player’s rep levy. The remainder of the levy is paid in two instalments due 31 January and 28 February.

Travel and uniform costs are not included in the levy.

More information on the levy can be found on page 16 of the 2023 Representative Player Handbook.

What uniform will I require?

Players are required to purchase Tigers shorts, socks, and warmup shirt. Most players also purchase a Tigers hoodie and kitbag. Each team is provided with a set of Shoalhaven Tigers singlets, the team manager is responsible for these.

Can I wear tournament jumpers instead of a Tigers jumper?

It is an expectation that players who own a Tigers hoodie or jacket will wear it while representing SBA. This includes in our home stadium and while away at tournaments such as SJL and John Martin Country Tournament.

Will my family be required to do anything?

Yes. Your family will be rostered on the score bench for your games over competition weekends and asked to assist with fundraising throughout the year. The team manager role is usually taken on by a parent or guardian.

Can I become a Representative Coach?

Yes. An application and selection process is held prior to representative trials each year. Coaches must have completed a BNSW coaching certificate. Learn more about coaching here.

Can I sponsor a player or team?

Yes! Sponsorship options are available for individual players and teams. Visit our sponsorship page to find out more.
